Yunlong is one of the few new electric motorcycle start-ups that offer light electric motorcycles designed for urban cycling.
After announcing their first two electric bike designs, the company just announced the specifications of their third and newest bike, Yoyo.
Following Smart Desert and Smart Classic, Smart Old is built on a similar platform.
“Yoyo is inspired by Brat Style models from China. They are similar to EEC electric bicycle, but have a cleaner appearance and all non-essential bicycle parts have been removed. As a result, they become easier to ride and Combine the two styles.”
Yoyo is powered by one or two LG batteries installed under the artificial fuel tank. In Eco mode, each battery has a rated cruising range of 50 miles (80 kilometers), which means that two batteries are enough to ride 100 miles (161 kilometers). Before reaching 70% of their original capacity, these batteries are also rated for 700 charging cycles.
The core of Yoyo is its mid-drive brushless motor. Just like batteries, Fly Free’s three electric motorcycles share the same motor. Its rated continuous power is 3 kW, but its peak power may be higher for accelerating bursts and climbing.
The motor will provide three riding modes: Eco, City and Speed. Remember, as the speed and acceleration curves increase, the range will naturally decrease. The top speed of a bicycle is 50 mph (81 km/h), which can only be achieved with two batteries. When using a single battery, the top speed is limited to a more moderate 40 mph (64 km/h).
The unique LED headlights give the bicycle a retro look, while the rear LED tail light bar adds a modern feel.
At the same time, the limited instrumentation pays tribute to the Brat motorcycle style. The single circular meter provides digital/analog speed readings as well as motor temperature, battery life and mileage. That’s it. Spartan, but effective.
Smart keys, USB charging and smartphone integration are all modern additions to the retro minimalist style of this bike. In keeping with the minimalist theme, accessories are very limited.
However, this does not mean that storage does not exist. Riders can choose from three different cargo options: brown or black leather bags or black steel ammunition tanks.
Isac Goulart, Fly Free’s development manager, told Electrek that production is expected to start as early as February this year. He added:
“The pre-sale will start in early March and is expected to be delivered in October. We are currently working hard to obtain DOT approval in the United States and EEC certification in the European Union. Now we are preparing for pre-sales in the United States, Canada and the European Union.”
The retail price of Smart Old in the US is US$7,199. However, during the March pre-sale period, all models of Fly Free will offer a 35-40% discount. This will bring the price of Smart Old down to around US$4,500.
Fly Free plans to conduct pre-sales on the Indiegogo platform, and other large electric motorcycle and scooter companies have successfully used this initiative to carry out large-scale events. In the past few years, dozens of companies have raised millions of dollars by pre-selling electric motorcycles, scooters and bicycles on Indiegogo.
Although Indiegogo does take some steps to make the process as transparent and trustworthy as possible, it can still be a “buyer beware” situation. This is because pre-sales of Indiegogo and other crowdfunding websites are not necessarily legally binding. Although most companies have delivered their electric bicycles and scooters, there are often delays, and in rare cases, some products have never been produced.
Let Fly Free benefit a lot. Assuming we will see these bicycles on the road soon, they will definitely look interesting. Check out the Smart Old video demo below.
Fly Free definitely has an impressive lineup of three electric motorcycles. If the specifications are established, they will be very suitable for the market between low-power electric scooters and expensive highway electric motorcycles.
A e-bike with a speed of 50 miles per hour will become the holy grail of urban cycling. Fast enough to handle any urban assault job, while keeping the top speed low enough to allow the use of cheaper motors and batteries. You can even use it to jump from town to town on the roads and country roads on the rear right.
However, Fly Free will face some fierce competition. Super SOCO is about to launch its own TC Max, which can reach a speed of 62 mph, and even electric scooters that can reach a speed of 44 mph (70 km/h) like NIU NGT provide competitive price Specification.
Of course, Fly Free still needs to prove that they can deliver electric motorcycles. The prototype looks great, but without announcing a reliable production plan, it will be difficult to properly measure the company’s future.
But I am pulling for them. I like these designs, the prices are fair, and the market needs these electric motorcycles in between. I would love to see belt drives instead of chains, but at this price, belt drives have never been given. We will check back when the pre-sale starts in March to learn more about the company’s future plans.
